Recommended Dumpster Size for Roofing Projects
Shingles are heavy for their size but lighter than dirt or concrete, so most roofing jobs fit in a 10- or 15-yard dumpster depending on the volume of the job.
| Job size | Recommended dumpster | Dimensions | Holds | Starting price | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Small | 10-yard | 15’ × 8’ × 3’ | About 4 pickup truck loads | From $275 | Roof repairs, sheds, porches, garages, smaller shingle tear-offs |
| Medium | 15-yard | 15’ × 8’ × 4’ | About 8 pickup truck loads | From $305 | Full tear-off on a typical home, larger shingle jobs |
| Large | 20-yard | 16’ × 8’ × 5’ | About 12 pickup truck loads | From $335 | Roofing combined with remodeling, siding, or demolition debris |
Measurements are approximate and prices are starting rates; your quote depends on how long you keep the dumpster and what you are throwing away. Heavy materials like dirt and concrete have a 5-ton limit in a 10-yard dumpster, and we paint a fill line inside every container for reference. Not sure? Tell us what you are tossing and we will recommend a size.

How It Works
- Call or book online. Tell us your address, roof size, and start date, and we will recommend a 10- or 15-yard.
- We deliver. We place the dumpster close to the work area and set it on wood boards to protect your driveway.
- Tear off and load. Toss shingles straight from the roof edge into the container, staying under the fill line.
- We haul it away. Call when the job is done and we pick it up. Need more time? Rental extensions are available for an added cost.
Tips for a Cleaner Roof Tear-Off
- Place it close. Park the dumpster near the eave you are tearing off first so crews waste less time carrying debris.
- Protect the landscaping. Tarp shrubs and flower beds under the drip line to catch stray nails and granules.
- Load evenly. Spread shingles across the floor of the container instead of piling them at one end.
- Watch the fill line. Overfilled or overweight dumpsters can’t be hauled safely.
- Sweep for nails. Run a magnetic sweeper across the driveway and yard before pickup.
- Book early in storm season. After a big storm, roofers across the Grand Strand need dumpsters at the same time.
Roofing Debris Removal FAQs
What size dumpster do I need for a roof replacement?
Most roof replacements fit in a 10- or 15-yard dumpster. Smaller roofs, repairs, and sheds usually fit a 10-yard. A full tear-off on a typical home, or more than one layer of shingles, usually needs a 15-yard. Call (843) 808-3661 with your roof size and we’ll recommend the right one.
How much does a roofing dumpster cost?
A roofing dumpster from Dumpster Dynasty starts at $275 for a 10-yard, $305 for a 15-yard, and $335 for a 20-yard. Your final price depends on how long you keep it and what goes in it. Veterans and active military save 15% with ID, and you’ll know the price before delivery.
Are shingles too heavy for a dumpster?
No. Shingles are heavy, but they are lighter than dirt or concrete and are handled with a 10- or 15-yard dumpster depending on the job. For very heavy materials we have a 5-ton limit in a 10-yard dumpster, and we paint a fill line inside so you can see when to stop loading.
Will the dumpster damage my driveway?
We take steps to protect it. Every Dumpster Dynasty roll-off is set on wood boards to spread the weight and protect concrete, asphalt, and pavers. We’ll help you choose a firm, level spot the truck can reach, and on gravel or grass we look for the safest ground available.
Can I put underlayment, flashing, and nails in the dumpster?
Yes. Underlayment, felt, flashing, drip edge, nails, roof decking, and packaging are all accepted along with shingles. Asbestos, paint, chemicals, and other hazardous materials are not allowed. If your home is older and you’re unsure what the roofing contains, call (843) 808-3661 before loading it.
How fast can I get a roofing dumpster delivered?
Same-day and next-day delivery is often available in our core area of Georgetown County, southern Horry County, and northern Charleston County. Conway, Mount Pleasant, Isle of Palms, Moncks Corner, and Williamsburg County are scheduled deliveries. We’re open Monday to Saturday, 7am to 6pm, with 24/7 emergency availability.
How long can I keep a roofing dumpster?
Most roof tear-offs are finished quickly, and your quote is based on how long you need the dumpster. If weather delays your job, rental extensions are available for an added cost, based on current availability. Just call us before your scheduled pickup so we can adjust your rental.
